Sumo's salaried ranks
A sekitori is a wrestler ranked in Juryo or Makuuchi. The word is a status, not a separate division.
Reaching Juryo brings a monthly salary and visible changes in tournament life. Sekitori wear silk competition mawashi, take part in the division's ring-entering ceremony, and may wear the formal oichomage hairstyle. They also receive attendants from the lower ranks rather than performing the same chores expected of junior wrestlers.
Because those privileges begin at Juryo, the promotion line between Makushita and Juryo is among the most consequential on the banzuke. A wrestler can cross it more than once during a career as results and injuries move the ranking up or down.
