The top division
Makuuchi is the highest of professional sumo's six divisions. It contains the named ranks of Yokozuna, Ozeki, Sekiwake, and Komusubi, followed by the numbered Maegashira ranks.
Makuuchi wrestlers normally compete once on each of a grand tournament's 15 days. The daily matchups are not a fixed bracket. Officials arrange them as the tournament develops, balancing rank, record, stable restrictions, and the championship race.
This is the division shown at the end of a tournament day and covered most heavily by broadcasts. Its championship is the Emperor's Cup yusho that most viewers mean when they talk about winning a basho.
