Komusubi
Komusubi (小結) is the fourth-highest rank in sumo, directly below sekiwake. It is the lower of the two san'yaku positions below ozeki. Komusubi wrestlers are scheduled to face yokozuna and ozeki in the first week of a tournament, making it one of the most challenging positions in the sport.
Komusubi commonly meet Yokozuna and Ozeki early in the tournament, so the schedule can be difficult from the opening days. Eight wins earns kachi-koshi and usually creates a case for promotion to Sekiwake when a place is available.
The typical path to Komusubi is a winning record near the top of Maegashira. The exact result needed depends on how many named-rank positions open and how the surrounding wrestlers performed.
