The losing side of the line
Make-koshi means finishing with more losses than wins. For a wrestler on a 15-bout schedule, the eighth loss confirms it. In the lower divisions, where wrestlers normally compete seven times, four losses is the usual dividing line.
Make-koshi normally brings demotion on the next banzuke, with a larger losing score generally risking a larger fall. The exact movement still depends on the rest of the ranking picture.
Yokozuna cannot be demoted and are expected to withdraw or retire when they can no longer perform at the level of the rank. Ozeki follow a separate two-tournament system: one losing record makes an Ozeki kadoban, and a second consecutive losing record causes demotion.
