Tsukiotoshi — Thrust Down
Tsukiotoshi (突き落とし) is a winning technique where the wrestler thrusts the opponent down to the clay by pushing or striking at the upper body while shifting to the side. The lateral movement causes the opponent to lose their balance and fall forward or to the side.
Unlike hatakikomi (slap down), which uses a pulling motion, tsukiotoshi uses an active thrusting push directed downward. The distinction is subtle but important — tsukiotoshi involves a positive forward force applied at an angle, while hatakikomi relies on pulling or deflecting.
Tsukiotoshi is commonly used by oshi-zumo (pushing sumo) specialists who combine powerful arm thrusts with quick footwork to create angles of attack.
