Komusubi
Komusubi (小結) is the fourth-highest rank in sumo, directly below sekiwake. It is the lower of the two san'yaku positions below ozeki. Komusubi wrestlers are scheduled to face yokozuna and ozeki in the first week of a tournament, making it one of the most challenging positions in the sport.
Because of the brutal early-tournament schedule, a 7-8 record (majority losses) is extremely common for komusubi, and any wrestler who achieves eight wins (a kachi-koshi) at komusubi has performed admirably.
The typical path to komusubi runs through a strong performance in the maegashira ranks — usually winning 11 or more bouts as a high-ranking maegashira earns promotion into the named ranks.
