Uwatenage — Overarm Throw
Uwatenage (上手投げ) is an overarm belt throw in which the attacking wrestler grips the opponent's mawashi from above (the uwate position) and pivots, using the grip and hip rotation to swing the opponent to the ground.
The uwate grip — arm over the opponent's arm and onto their belt — is generally considered the dominant position in belt wrestling. A wrestler who secures uwate on both sides has a significant advantage. The throw combines the mechanical leverage of the hip pivot with the pulling force on the belt.
Uwatenage is a spectacular technique that can send an opponent sailing through the air, and highlights in sumo often feature crisp uwatenage by technically gifted wrestlers.
