The officials around the ring
The five officials seated around the dohyo in formal black kimono are shimpan, or ringside judges. They are former wrestlers who now serve as Japan Sumo Association elders.
The gyoji makes the first decision by pointing the gunbai toward the winner. If a shimpan believes that decision may be wrong or that the finish was too close, the judge can raise a hand and call a monoii. The five judges then meet in the ring to review what happened.
They can uphold the gyoji's decision, reverse it, or order a rematch called torinaoshi when the result cannot be separated. Video review can assist the discussion, but the decision is made by the judges. Their black clothing makes them easy to distinguish from the colorful gyoji.
