What the referee is saying
The gyoji's repeated call during active movement is nokotta, from a word meaning “remaining.” It tells the wrestlers that the bout is still live. A useful listening translation is “still in” or “keep going,” although it is a conventional call rather than a full sentence.
Hakkeyoi is an urging call used when the wrestlers are engaged but action has slowed or stalled. It encourages them to continue. You may hear one hakkeyoi followed by repeated nokotta as movement resumes.
Neither call starts the bout. The tachiai begins when both wrestlers show mutual readiness and launch from the starting lines. The gyoji manages the contest, watches the boundary and falls, and points the gunbai toward the wrestler judged to have won.
